From Prison“Tiger King” Joe Exotic Has New Cryptocurrency Hitting Market

Joseph Maldonado-Passage is serving a 22 year prison term as federal inmate number 26154-017 at the Federal Medical Center in Fort Worth, TX. Maldonado-Passage, better known at Joe Exotic (”Exotic”) was the main subject of a popular Netflix series, Tiger King, documenting the life of Exotic, a tiger breeder and his rival, animal activist, Carole Baskin.

Rumors circled in January 2021 that Exotic might be on President Donald Trump’s clemency list but that was not to be. However, there may be another chance for freedom. The U.S. 10th District Court of Appeals has ordered Exotic to be resentenced following his conviction in the murder-for-hire plot of Big Cat Rescue’s Carole Baskin. A appellate court found that the trial court erred in the proceedings by incorrectly calculating his prison term under sentencing guidelines. Exotic could be coming home sooner rather than later.

Exotic released a statement on Twitter that his attorneys are “... in possession of newly discovered evidence which not only shows government misconduct, but witness perjury. Justice is coming for Joe.” While Exotic waits for his new sentence and hoping that it is “time served,” he’s still using his celebrity with a new “tell-all” book scheduled for release in November and a namesake cryptocurrency. Exotic’s post prison life may be even more sensational than the life before it.

Many people enter prison while their legitimate businesses carry on (example being someone like Martha Stewart), so Exotics use of his celebrity to launch an even bigger career post prison is not unusual. While there are Bureau of Prison policy on inmates conducting business that place a number of restrictions on their activity in any business, it is a rather broad policy that is only enforced in the rarest and most egregious instances. Don’t look for Exotic to be holding board meetings from federal prison.

While Cryptocurrencies have been around for a while and have become more widely accepted, there has been a surge in activity related to meme coins. Meme Coins derive their value from their very existence, such as the somewhat infamous Dogecoin. The tokens grow in popularity as does their value based purely on their potential as coins ... like a currency that thrives on the number of “Likes.” What better way to get some momentum than adopting the name of a well-known celebrity or cause. Probably nobody fits high profile celebrity better than Joe Exotic.

Cashing in on celebrity is exactly what owners of $TKING hope to accomplish. In an article in The Independent Michael Kamerman, CEO of fintech firm Skilling said that coin memes like the popular Dogecoin is “moved by headlines, tweets, celebrity or corporate endorsements, and while that’s likely belittled by ‘traditional’ investors, it’s what brings the masses to cryptocurrencies.” There may be no bigger celebrity play than a tiger-taming, flamboyant, ex-inmate who is looking to outdo himself with ever more outrageous escapades ... not to mention that 2022 starts the Chinese year of the Tiger!

According to an announcement earlier this year, Exotic owns a percentage of $TKING tokens which he received during the “stealth launch of the coin.”

Exotic’s new coin comes after Baskin released her own version of cryptocurrency, $CAT, in early May. Baskin’s website claims that her new “$CAT coin is not a currency for investment, but rather is a purr-ency of our fans to show their love for the cats ...” It seems the rivalry will continue as Exotic’s own website states, "We will never let Carole win! Find your inner Tiger as Joe, $TKING, and his legal team stage the comeback of the century! We will land the first tiger on the moon to free Joe! Team Joe for the win!"

The Tiger King craze even hit a car collector in Amsterdam who had a Bugatti Chiron (Priced at approximately $3 million) wrapped in a $TKING motif. The collector said in a statement that Exotic needs another chance, “I’m just like everyone of the maybe 65 million people who binge-watched Tiger King during the pandemic. As crazy as the story was, it helped us get through a really tough time so I figured I’d support something that supports Joe.

Along with the cryptocurrency, rumors continue to circle that Netflix is going to have Tiger King 2! Stay tuned.
