The new chair of the U.S Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Gary Gensler, said he is weighing up a robust regulatory regime of the crypto market.
Gensler said in an interview with Bloomberg Tuesday that his interest in crypto does not mean he will be instilling a hands-off regulatory approach that many in the space are hoping for. “While I’m neutral on the technology, even intrigued – I spent three years teaching it, leaning into it – I’m not neutral about investor protection,” Gensler said. To this end, he has not given a timeline on the introduction of SEC action on cryptocurrency, nor did he comment on the potential approval of a crypto exchange-traded fund, despite the long list of applications the regulator has received.
